Spelling Jesus

Ephesians focuses on the themes of God’s redemptive plan through Jesus, the unity and new identity of the church, spiritual blessings, and practical guidance for living as followers of Christ. Ephesians is a “crash course” in basic Christianity, providing instruction about salvation, relationships with the church, spiritual transformation, and standing firm amidst spiritual conflict.

You cannot spell Jesus without us.

Jesus is in us, with us, for us, and lives through us.

My identity in Christ is the basis for my activity.

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptismone God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all. However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ. That is why the Scriptures say, “When he ascended to the heights, he led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to his people.”Notice that it says “he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world. And the same one who descended is the one who ascended higher than all the heavens, so that he might fill the entire universe with himself. Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Unity and Teamwork in Christ
•What does it mean to “represent Team Jesus” even though Christians have different roles and gifts?
•How does the analogy of an orchestra or a puzzle help illustrate the importance of unity in the church?
•Why is it significant that you cannot spell Jesus without us? What does it mean that “Jesus is in us, with us, for us, and lives through us”? How does this influence our actions and relationships with others?

Identity and Purpose
•According to the passage, how does understanding our identity in Christ change the way we live and serve?
•Pastor Joe says, “I live from approval not for approval.” What does this look like in daily life?
•Review the list of things God has done for “us” (blessed, chosen, redeemed, forgiven, etc.). Which one stands out most, and why?

The Church’s Mission
•Joe states, “The church isn’t random but central. The power of God flows through the church.” What does this mean for our involvement in church life?
•How does Ephesians 4:7 and 4:16 shape our understanding of serving, partnering, and growing as a church?
•What does it look like for a church to operate from “unity without uniformity”? Why is this important?

Practical Application
•The outline includes four calls: Walk Worthy, Keep Unity, Works of Ministry, and Grow to Maturity. Which area comes easiest, and which is most challenging for you, and why?
•How can you contribute your unique gifts and abilities to “advance the mission of Jesus victoriously” through the local church?
•In practical terms, what does it mean to “walk worthy” of your calling, as mentioned in verses 1-2?
