Overcome Your Inner Coward

Be watchful! Stand firm in he faith! Act like men! Be strong! Let all that you do be done in love! These five phrases from 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ESV are a descriptive overview of how we can increasingly be a full grown man. It's not perfection because every day we are a beginner. We can start out on fire, be a crazy fool by lunch, and lose it all in a moment. The truth is we need each other to be our best selves.

God is with me no matter what

After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant“Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

Deuteronomy 34:7-8 NIV

Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone.The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.

The path to my greatest potential is through my greatest fear.

Fear can catalyze or fear can paralyze.

Deuteronomy 31:1-7 NIV

Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel“I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’The LORD your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the LORD said.And the LORD will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land.The LORD will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you.Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the LORD swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.

1 Kings 2:1-3 NIV

When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a manand observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go

Courage requires your faith to be stronger than your deepest fear
as you move from what is to what needs to be.

Judges 6:12, Judges 6:14 ESV

And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.”And the LORD turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?”

Joshua 1:3-9 NIV

I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

When Jesus is not intimately known, He cannot be adequately shown.

Joshua 4:20-24 ESV

And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal.And he said to the people of Israel, “When your children ask their fathers in times to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed overso that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever.”

Joshua 24:14-15 NIV

“Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

Ephesians 6:10-11, Ephesians 6:13 NIV

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

How do you think Joshua felt being entrusted with leading Israel after Moses? How would you feel in his place?

•What promises did God make to Joshua before he entered the land? How can these promises encourage you in your own life?

•Why do you think God repeated the command to be strong and courageous so many times? What do you need courage for right now?

•How does obedience to God’s commands relate to success, according to this passage?

•How does Joshua’s leadership transition relate to leadership changes you’ve experienced in your family, church, or community?

•What qualities did Joshua display that make a good leader? How can you cultivate these qualities?

•How does God’s reassurance to Joshua give you comfort in your current circumstances?
